18 Things

April 17, 2011 § Leave a comment

1. I turned 18 today. I guess I’m not a baby anymore.

2. Thanks to my lovely sister and amazing parents for a splendid birthday weekend!

3. I can never get sick of the Houston Galleria. I got a few new, pretty things that I’ll post about soon.

4. All in all, I had four Magnolia cupcakes and 2 slices of Cheesecake Factory cheesecakes. And I don’t regret it one bit.

5. No matter how much time passes by, I always have the best time with three of my best friends. This time, we went to Freebirds and Jamba Juice and had a ball.

6. Freebirds is amazing. But anything below a Monster burrito is for wimps.

7. Why is this post primarily about food?

8. I’m counting down the days till I get my Macbook Pro. Blogging should be a LOT more consistent once it gets here!

9. School has gotten spectacularly chill lately. There’s only one-and-a-half months left and it’s gotten down to reviews, testing, events, holidays, activities, etc.

10. I love it when my whole family is under one roof.

11. Graduation is so soon. I’m really starting to grasp that my life is about to majorly change.

12. I’m two years away from being twenty. Holy Batman.

13. I treated myself to a bottle of Essie’s Ballet Slippers today and it looks so classy.

14. I have been doing research on San Francisco and its shopping, restaurants, sights and scenes, and starting to get really excited about moving there come fall.

15. I need new shoes pronto.

16. I need to clean my closet pronto.

17. Lots and lots of traveling to be done soon.

18. 17 is going to be a hard year to beat, but I have faith that 18 is going to be the best year yet.

Snapshots {What I’ve Been Up To}

April 3, 2011 § Leave a comment

My blog has been much neglected this past month. I have no particular reason, except perhaps I had a healthy dose of bloggers’ block. I have almost exactly two months until I graduate and I’ve been trying to spend time with all of my friends and family before flying merrily away to new beginnings and all that. Making memories. Consoling, congratulating, celebrating. March was mostly a splendid month, though it had its rough, mundane and lethargic at moments.

{ Best friends date – The King’s Speech, La Madeleine, Barnes & Noble/Starbucks }

{ Chicken Pesto Pasta and Raspberry Lemonade at La Madeleine }

{ Bread and an assortment of jams at La Madeleine }

{ Sweet Cream ice cream with fresh strawberries on a shopping excursion }

{ Cinnamon French Toast Poundcake w/ Maple Syrup Frosting for my daddy’s birthday }

{ At the Bayou City Art Festival with Brina }

{ Coffee ice cream –and very true words– on a hot day at the art festival }

{ Samosas and Mango Juice at the BCAF }

{ Supporting Brina and her group’s project – The Universal Wishing Well }

{ Final Four pandemonium at Houston’s Discovery Green }

{ With my best friends at Discovery Green waiting for The Hold Steady and Sublime with Rome }

{ Crazy lights, free sunglasses, and free concerts }

{ Sublime with Rome! }

{ I don’t practice Santeria, I ain’t got no crystal ball… }

{ NCAA stars Jimmy Fredette (BYU) and Nolan Smith (Duke… No comment.) }

{ Post-concert midnight pantry raids }

Point is… March was a very busy, very fun month! Hopefully, April will be just as successful. What with my birthday coming up soon, that should be no problem at all. I should be back on track with posting three to four times a week also, so here’s to inspiration and motivation and fun times.

Academy Awards 2011: Best Dressed

February 28, 2011 § Leave a comment

Anyone watch the Oscars last night? I used to live and breathe award shows, especially the red carpet part. It smelled very nice, thanks for asking. I’ve long given up such a boring hobby, but because two of my favorite actors ever- James Franco and Anne Hathaway were hosting and because some of my favorites were up for awards, I tuned in!

Verdict: So-so. Francaway can do no wrong in my mind, but they could’ve done better. The best part of the entire night was hands down the Harry Potter-Toy Story-Social Network-Twilight Autotune short. Hilarious! These ladies stole my heart on the red carpet:

{Amy Adams in L’Wren Scott}

She is so classy. I love the silhouette of this gown, the color, the sparkles, everything! And I’m also really jealous of how she got back to uber-skinnyness after having a baby just weeks ago. I do love how she paired the blue with the emeralds and her beautiful smile, of course!

{Michelle Williams in Haute Couture Chanel}

When I think of classic, ethereal, soft beauty, I always think of Michelle Williams. Her choices are always traditional, but edgy and quirky at the same time. I love what a simple statement this gown puts out there for her– she is one of the most underrated stars out there.

{Reese Witherspoon in Giorgio Armani Prive}

Reese Witherspoon is the quintessential All-American movie star. Everyone loves her. She is sweet, funny, upbeat. Her fashion choices never disappoint. This is one of her safer picks, but the silhouette and simplicity is gorgeous. Every time I look at her in this dress, I think of the scene in Confessions of a Shopaholic where Becky Bloomwood is wearing a very similar dress and gets mistaken for a waitress. I however doubt that Reese had any problems with such a misunderstanding.

{Natalie Portman in Rodarte}

Ah, there’s my girl crush. That color is absolutely ravishing on her. She is positively glowing! Everything about this dress on her is perfection and I am beyond excited that she won Best Actress.

{Mila Kunis in Elie Saab}

Speechless. She is so stunning- the dress is flawless, her makeup is amazing. Mila won best dressed in my book!

It has been a busy couple of weeks for me, but I will be back with meaningless chatter in no time 🙂

It’s that time of the year again.

You know what I’m talking about. The colorful boxes. The little girls in green vests. The staggering amount of money willingly given. Apparently they cost different in various states– California, please please please please be cheaper.

In my life, there are two seasons. Girl Scouts Cookies season and the other season. The not-so-great season. Thankfully, they’re back! I’m so happy I could cry. Or I could reach over and stuff some cookies in my mouth. Samoas (or Caramel DeLites as they call them these days) are my favorites by a long run, but I also appreciate some Shortbreads.

What’s your favorite?

Wintry Days

You know that feeling when you are so cold that you can’t numb your fingers and your heart feels like it’s on standstill and your hair practically turns into a nest of icicles and your lips turn blue? Yeah, I don’t either. Except for that one time in Chicago.

But just in case I ever do, I’d want to be well prepared to look cute while I’m at it:

I’ve heard great things about Hunter wellies and Hunter thermal socks. They look clunky by themselves, but look tres chic with leggings and/or skinny jeans and keep you warm at the same time. I’d want them in dark brown because as much as I’d welcome the warmth, I’d hardly want to look like a firefighter on a mission. Not that a firefighter on a mission would look anything less than tres chic.

I’m a trend snob. I think I’m too cool for trends. And then fast-forward two months and I’m all over a trend. So fickle of me, I know. I did turn my nose up at the phenomenon known as circle scarves or infinity scarves because they look like uncomfortable and awkward. But my friend showed me up and came to school lookin’ like she just walked off the runway at NY Fashion Week and I ate my words right there. Apparently these get a bit pricey those (this one is on Etsy for 32  bucks), so it’s a good thing that my mom is going to knit me one. Or is it?

Long sweater cardigans have been looking particularly wonderful lately as well. It’s chic and it just looks cozier than coats and jackets. The chunkier, looser, and prettier the better- and belted up too!

Non-chapped, smooth, non-icky lips are a must in such extreme weather, too. This one’s my favorite.

A personal trick of mine when I’m freezing in my 59degree Houston climate and can’t be bothered to put on anything cuter than sweats is to crank up the hair straightener and straighten the heck out of my hair and then warm my hands on my steaming hair. What’s a bit of sacrifice for a lot of warmth?

Or we could all just throw our hands up and decide to walk around wearing belted Snuggies if all else fails.

Year of the Rabbit

February 3, 2011 § Leave a comment

I am so amused.

There is a 60% chance for 1-3 inches of snow tomorrow and school got called off. Oh, the perks of living in south Texas 🙂 It was quite endearing to witness all of the students immediately perking up at the news of a snow day– there hasn’t been an official snow day here in more than twelve years.

Oh and– Happy Chinese New Year!

Yesterday, my mommy made dumplings in celebration. I don’t appreciate meat as much as I should, so she made me ones with shrimp and celery filling. Today, after my dad finally came home (he’s been stranded in Kansas for three days), we kicked it up a notch and went to a Chinese buffet. I still smell like grease and fried rice.

All this down-home business would not cut it in Asia right now. I should definitely add “experience Lunar New Years” in Asia onto my bucket list because apparently they take out the big guns out east. I would love to experience all the lanterns and redness and family and red envelopes!

It’s been a dead couple days, so hopefully these posts will get more interesting soon once the snow rejuvenates me. May your year be filled with good fortune, good health, and happiness!

Caroline’s Favorite Things {1}

I can already tell that this week will be a breeze compared to last week, knock on wood! Except… I’m preparing myself for an apocalypse tomorrow- 24 degrees and thunderstorms. Doesn’t sound too bad unless you’re from around here. That’s like incomprehensible to us. Anyways, new feature! My favorite things. Like Oprah, but not as glitzy.

{ Tarragon Chicken Salad Sandwich from Starbucks, $5.75 }

Roasted chicken, cranberries, celery, lettuce, and tarragon dressing. A whopping 480 calories (only 100 from fat!) but also a feel-good 35 grams of protein. How can you say no to that?

Also, I edited this below-average iPhone picture with Picnik. What a nifty site! I am addicted.
